Your footage is on three drives and a downloads folder, and the filenames stopped making sense years ago. SurSort indexes every video and audio file locally, tags them from their own metadata, and finds the one you want as you type, without anything touching the cloud.
SurSort Media Manager is a desktop app for Windows and Mac that indexes every video and audio file on your drives into one searchable library. It runs entirely offline: no account, no cloud, no uploads. Type a few letters and the file you were hunting for shows up, with a hover preview so you know it is the right one.
Point it at a folder or an external drive and it builds the library for you. From there it handles the jobs you normally split between Finder or File Explorer, a tagger and a media player.
The auto-tagging is what separates SurSort from a plain search box. Most media files already carry metadata like the recording date, the device that shot them or the artist, and SurSort reads it and turns it into tags. That means you can find "everything from the old phone" without ever having named a folder that way. You can add your own tags on top, with suggestions as you type, so the library follows how you think rather than a folder tree you set up years ago.
Everything you do stays inside SurSort. Tags and hidden status live in the app's own library, and the file on disk is untouched, so it looks exactly the same in Finder or File Explorer. That is a sensible design for anyone nervous about a tool rewriting their archive. The details panel shows size, duration, resolution and location at a glance, which saves a trip into file properties when you are checking whether a clip is the 4K master or a proxy.
Support covers MP4, MOV, MP3, WAV and other common formats. The Vault is the one feature that is not shared across platforms: it is Mac only.
DealFuel frames it as an alternative to Adobe Bridge, MediaMonkey and Microsoft File Explorer. In practice it sits between them. It is lighter than Bridge and not built around photos, and unlike MediaMonkey it treats video as a first-class citizen. If your real problem is "I know I recorded that, but where is it?", this is a better fit than any of the three.
Video editors and YouTubers with years of raw footage spread across external drives will get the most out of it. Podcasters sitting on a pile of voice memos and episode files are a close second. It also works as a private home-video library for anyone who does not want family footage anywhere near a cloud service.
SurSort is $15.95 for a lifetime licence (listed at $39.95), sold as separate Windows and Mac plans. The Windows plan needs Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit) and the Mac plan needs macOS 12.0 or later. Both include AI-powered instant search, smart sorting, auto and custom tagging and free automatic updates. Only the Mac plan adds the Local Vault. At this price it is one of the cheaper ways to stop scrolling through folders named "export final v3".
